AP Biology: Cell Structure Quiz

Cells are the fundamental units of life and are classified into two main types: prokaryotic and eukaryotic. Prokaryotic cells, such as bacteria and archaea, lack a membrane-bound nucleus and instead have a nucleoid region containing DNA. They are generally smaller and simpler, possessing structures like cell membranes, cell walls made of peptidoglycan (in bacteria), capsules, flagella, and pili.

Eukaryotic cells contain a membrane-bound nucleus that houses genetic material and various membrane-bound organelles including mitochondria, chloroplasts (in plants), endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus, and lysosomes. Their cell membranes are selectively permeable phospholipid bilayers embedded with proteins and receptors, which regulate transport and communication. The cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells contains the cytoskeleton made up of microtubules, intermediate filaments, and microfilaments that maintain cell shape and support cellular functions.

This free quiz covers essential concepts such as the differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, the structure and function of organelles like the nucleus, mitochondria, and chloroplasts, and the composition and properties of cellular membranes. It also reviews the roles of the cytoskeleton, cytoplasm, and membrane systems in cell structure and transport mechanisms.
